The ultimate toasties in the Top End

Sandwiches – we can take them or leave them. But there’s something really intriguing about putting a bland, dry sandwich into a toastie machine and, voila, you have a melt-in-your-mouth, flavorsome toastie!

We’ve taken one for the team and gone on a toastie-tour of the Top End, bringing you our best-of for your taste buds’ enjoyment!

Postie (Darwin City)

Sometimes you just can’t go past a good ham and cheese – and Postie does a mean toastie! Their specialty is simple – they only do takeaway coffee and toasties, and they do them well.

Our pick is the ham, cheese, seeded mustard and pickles – but they also have a vegan grilled cheese which is worth knowing about!

Alberto’s (Darwin City)

Albertos is a small but buzzing cafe located next to Australia Post in Darwin city. They have an extensive list of toasties on the menu, including various ham and chicken options, but our controversial pick is the ham, cheese and pineapple toastie – for a mere $7! If you’re a pineapple-on-your-pizza kinda person then this toastie is for you. We know pineapple is a controversial ingredient but we’re all for it!

Melissa’s Take-Away (Darwin City)

Don’t be fooled by the basic bain-marie, over the counter exterior. Melissa’s is a local haunt for good reason… their toasties and homemade pies and sausage rolls.

Bacon & Egg: They’re not light-on with the ingredients here. You get TWO eggs and THREE rashers of bacon topped off with BBQ sauce. It’s no fancy take on a brekkie toastie, but sometimes it’s the simple things that satisfy the most.

Cheese, Ham & Onion (special request): This is a made-to-order toastie that’s been tried and tested a dozen times! Select cheese, ham, onion and salt and pepper. It’s simple but keeps us coming back for more!

Laneway Specialty Coffee (Parap)

This Melbourne-vibe cafe has all the latest trending meals on their menu and our tip is to never leave without a coffee in hand.

Sourdough Toastie: This toastie is heavy on the ham (just how we like it) but all the condiments – cheese, pickles, green mustard aioli and nduja (we told you they were on trend) – make this toastie an appetizing sensation in your mouth! The quality of the off-the-bone ham and sourdough bread are also notable.

Black Russian Caravan (Katherine)

This little retro style pop-up van can be found next to the Visitor Information Centre in Katherine. If you’re heading to Katherine, this place is a MUST. It’s almost worth the three hour drive from Darwin… just for a toastie. Toastie’s are their specialty. Choose from their extensive list of The Originals and The Newbies.

The Rueben: Our top pick of all the toasties, ever. The combination of corned beef, dill pickles, sauerkraut, cheese and the (oh my lord) creamy garlic dressing makes this the most moreish toastie in the Top End!

Eggplant Parmigana: Don’t be fooled by the absence of meat. This toastie has all the flavours of a parmi encased in a toastie, which makes it even better. Great for the veggos, but also not to be missed by all.

Besser Kitchen & Brew Bar (Winnellie)

This cool little cafe located in industrial Winnellie is a hidden gem. It’s funky interior and Insta-worthy food match the tasty menu on offer. It’s worth the detour…

BBQ Pulled Pork and Cheese Toastie: If you like a flavour that packs a punch, then this is the toastie for you. The jalapenos and homemade smokey bbq sauce are teamed perfectly with pulled pork and “oozy” cheese. Even better, it’s served on a bed of their signature chilli fries!
