If you’ve lived in the Territory for a while, you’ll know the NT weather doesn’t do things by halves. One minute it’s blue skies and sunshine, the next it’s dark clouds and palm fronds everywhere! Did you know that from 1 October to 30 April, we officially enter the Higher Risk Weather Season — a time when the NT is most vulnerable to the big stuff: severe thunderstorms, tropical lows, cyclones, flooding, and bushfires in Central Australia.
The NT Emergency Service (NTES) is encouraging all Territorians and visitors to use this time to get storm-ready. Start by updating your emergency plan and checking your emergency kit. A little effort now can make a big difference later!
And here’s something to remember: the Territory is vast, and when severe weather hits, emergency crews have a lot of ground to cover. That’s why it’s smart to plan to get through the first 72 hours on your own. A well-prepared household can make all the difference while help is on the way.

- Nappies and formula if you’ve got babies in the house
- Enough non-perishable food and bottled water for at least three days
- A gas burner / portable cooker and utensils

- Important documents (IDs, insurance, birth certificates) sealed in waterproof bags
- Extra keys for the car and house
